September 2023

President's Message

BANNJ President Thomas Petersen

We hope all members had a great summer and wish everyone a safe and Happy Labor Day Weekend with family and friends!

Thank you to Bassam Salem of AtlasRTX who gave an excellent presentation on AI in the Homebuilding Industry on August 16th.  Attendees received some valuable information on the background of AI and how it will affect our industry in the future.  If you are going to IBS in early 2024 and are interested in the presentation, register for Bassam’s seminar there.  With our fall events to begin, all members are encouraged to attend our Annual Business Product Showcase & Builders’ Beefsteak on Thursday, September 28th at The Elan in Lodi, NJ.

Only a couple of tabletops remain for you to display your company products and services to the Northern New Jersey building community.  Excellent sponsor packages and discounts on group dinner tickets of 5 or more!   Invite your employees, colleagues, vendors, and friends to this fun networking night out and play in the bread building contest to win for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.

All Builder Members are encouraged to attend to support our Associate Members and vendors as we celebrate September as NAHB Associate Appreciation Month.

After the Beefsteak, be sure to join us for Reno’s Annual Pre-Holiday Networking Party on Thursday, October 26th as they host this awesome industry event with business connections, excellent food, live music, amazing prizes and much more!  On November 30th we will have a Holiday Gathering and Industry Speaker at the beautiful Cosentino showroom in Fairfield, NJ.  For registration and information on all events please visit https://members.bannj.org/events.

Leonard Herman

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of BANNJ Past President and friend Leonard Herman on August 12th.  Lenny was an instrumental leader at BANNJ and served as President in 1996.  He was the recipient of numerous awards for his involvement including Builder of the Year and Builder Hall of Fame and represented BANNJ at both the state (NJBA) and national (NAHB) levels as a life director. A friend to all, Lenny continued to participate in local board meetings and events and helped mentor newer members in the Association until recently due to health issues.  We will miss his kind presence and his active dedication and send our deepest condolences to the Herman Family.

Donations in Lenny’s memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, New Jersey Lion’s Club District 16N, Tomchei Shabbos of Bergen County or Bergenfield NJ Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Godspeed, Lenny

NAHB CEO Jim Tobin appeared on Fox Business to discuss the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) and the local barriers facing home builders and developers as they try to increase housing.

New data show a slowing economy brought on by tighter monetary policy. This should convince Fed hawks that now is the time to pause and let current restrictive monetary policy finish the job. The Fed should want to avoid tightening too much, which is now the greater risk.

NAHB Chairman Alicia Huey today issued a statement after the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a revised, final waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule under the federal Clean Water Act in the aftermath of the Supreme Court Sackett ruling.

New home size has trended lower because of higher interest rates and worsening housing affordability conditions.

The U.S. Department of Labor has published a final rule updating the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts (DBRA) regulations regarding the calculation of prevailing wages in local areas. The new rule goes into effect Oct. 23.
